My old man used this "diaper position" (as they call it in US) to thrash me growing up - when I was hauled up on to my shoulders not only could I hear the "swish" of the cane coming and feel the pain - with the best will in the world I couldn't help watching even though I tried to look away - so I heard, saw and felt every stroke.
